Aloha Honolulu Fire Family ~

It's time to come back and *check in* with my Fire Family! I will be returning to the Islands for ten days (July 19th to July 29th). In the past year, the Bay Area has been very good to me--but I've missed you all and my Island home immensely!

I've grown a lot personally, in the past year--and I've also learned a bunch of new contact staff, double-staff, fan, and hoop techniques too! From some of the best in the Bay Area (and the world!) I'm excited to pass on the wealth of knowledge that has been shared with me, as well as learn from each of you, too!

I would love to spend time with each and every one of you, celebrating and just hanging out at Queen's Beach exchanging knowledge and new ideas! Happy to share all and can't wait to see you all, too!

I'm flying into the Big Island first, then hopefully venture up to Maui....wondering if there's a good community on either island. and we are fortunate enough to have our own local Gathering
coming up in just 2 weeks!

Fire Tribe Hawaii is Gathering for the Summer Solstice from
Wednesday, June 18th through Sunday the 22nd on the
Leeward side of Oahu, Hawaii.

Reminder: Due to the rousing success of our Afterglow at this past Winter's Gathering, we are continuing the practice. We have shifted the schedule so that the last all-night fire circle takes place on Friday night (6/20) instead of the usual Saturday. Saturday morning we'll enact the Great Banishing Ritual then the rest of the time until Sunday afternoon will be dedicated to enjoying the Afterglow. This schedule allows those of us who need to leave early to do so without missing out on the Fire. Early Village Building starts on Tuesday (6/17)!

My first visit to Hawaii ; )

Hello!

I am visiting the lovely islands from July 9th - 21st. My friend Jaime and I are starting in Honolulu heading down to the big island and then traveling back up to Honolulu for our flight out.

We are both fire spinners, Jamie does staff and is an amazing photographer. I plat with poi, hoop and staff. Not sure if I'll be able to bring a staff with me but I'll be folding up a fire hoop to bring. ; )

Where should we go? Any events happening at the same time? Drum circles and the like?

Anyone know how I might go about teaching some hoop dancing workshops along the way?

2008 Burningman Fire Conclave

Has someone recorded the performance to be submitted to Crimson Rose for the conclave qualification??????

In order to become accepted as members of this years Burningman conclave a recording of the performance is necessary.
It must be submitted by July first.
If someone did get this done at Rebirth, that is great.
If not..... we still have time.

Write down your ideas (if you haven't already). Our intentions, interpetation, performance, or a basic display of what we have planned to do is vital if we want to be a part of the great circle.

I am attaching an email Crimson Rose sent to us many months ago informing us of the criteria necessary in order to qualify.

Here is the:

CRITERIA FOR BECOMING A GROUP WITHIN THE FIRE CONCLAVE 2008

CHALLENGE ONCE AGAIN
I challenge the Fire Performers of today and I know that you will meet
and embrace it whole heartedly. Leave the past dances alone and take
the evolutionary leap. If you have done a dance a certain way then try
something else. That is the whole point of choerography to try new
dances, moves, new tools. Stretch your imagination. The drive
to excel fire dance is a continued push for evolution. New and
different moves that propel a flaming tool through the air takes on
new life.

For those of you that have gifted your fire love within the Great
Circle, I ask that you read the information again even IF you think
you know. Every year we start fresh, no one is guaranteed a spot
within the Great Circle.

You ask WHY must I choreography the fire dance? Because everybody and
their "mother" is utilizing fire as part of their dance. Simple fire
dance moves use to wow the crowds, that is not the way it is any more.
We want more.

IMPORTANT FOR THIS YEAR - Each group must be comprised of at least 10
fire performers plus support staff.

STEP ONE ~ COMMUNICATE INTENT - TELL ME

STEP TWO ~ CREATE CHOREOGRAPHY

STEP THREE ~ SUBMIT MEDIA - SHOW ME

CRITERIA FOR BECOMING A GROUP WITHIN THE FIRE CONCLAVE

All groups, old or new, will be required to audition for admission
into the Fire Conclave membership, and will be considered based on the
following:

• SHIN - there must be one person who will take charge and be the
leader of a group. INCLUDING being present on the playa until after
burn night.
• Consciousness of Safety and understand the protocols at all times
• Complete and quality of application information.
• Clarity and ease of communication between Crimson and Shin.
• Communications between Shin and members of the group.
• Quality of proposed performance content.
• Adherence to rules, standards, deadlines.
• Rally a group of free spirited individuals.
• Lead with a firm but flexible and patient hand.
• Be willing to vouch and be responsible for the actions of all
members of their group.
• AND recognize spinning in the Great Circle is an honor and a gift.
• Being responsible for wrangling cats on fire in a choreographed
fire dance and communicating all necessary information.

• Qualified entries will create choreography. This can include any
fire tool and is open to broad interpretation in an effort to
encourage diversity and creativity from the Fire Artists in the
community.

• Anything beyond the standard tools, MUST be Ok'd by Crimson before
assuming that it will be allowed inside the Great Circle.

• Fire Conclave is given 25 minutes to dance. This can be broken up in
how ever you feel it works for you. You might only have 15 minutes of
dance, that is fine. You can do chaos / free style after that.

COMMUNICATE INTENT - TELL ME

DEADLINE - MARCH 1, 2008
IF IF IF - A Shin from past years is going to pass the Shin reins to
another person, I must hear from the present Shin before I accept the
new one.
• Shin will communicate the intention that their group is interested
in performing and willing to meet the criteria, deadlines and
responsibilities.
• The Shin may or may not know in March how many performers or who the
support staff is or what kind of dance the group will be creating. All
of this is fine.
• Because of the crazy nature of life in general the Shin may want to
name a person that will assist them with activities, carry part of the
load. This is what we call Shin Assist.
• Even if you have communicated with me since the last event, please
send another email with as much of the following information:

Once March 1st deadline has arrived, a discussion list for the Shin's,
Shins Assist will be created. The list will communicate details that
are essential for further information and to share knowledge among
other groups. As the years progresses we will add the Helmsmen to the
list as well.

CREATE CHOREOGRAPHY

• Create Choreography – The art of composing dances, the movement and
patterns of a dance composition means there is thought to the dance.

The direction for the Fire Conclave is choreographed dances, the
opposite to simple fire jam/ chaos. There is nothing wrong with free
form fire jams and each group will get a chance at a bit of chaos. But
to step within the boundary of the Great Circle, there needs to be
more. A diverse range of styles and techniques, choreograph with
intention make the best contribution to the Fire Conclave. “Fire
Dance” does NOT mean only one kind of dance or only a small number of
tools. Fire Dance is as diverse and wide ranging as the imagination of
the dancer that lights up. It is human nature to evolve and the drive
to move fire dance to the next evolutionary leap is no exception.
Because of the diverse level of the membership of the Fire Conclave,
some of you are already familiar with creating choreographed dances.
While others are not use to thinking in this direction, it become a
stretch (in a good way) of your creative mind. The dance can include
any fire tool and is open to broad interpretation in an effort to
encourage diversity and creativity from fire artists in the community.
Choreography does not necessarily
mean a synchronized dance, but it could.

SUBMIT MEDIA - SHOW ME ~ DEADLINE - JULY 1, 2008

• Submit Media – This could be in any form; video, DVD, web address. I
am able to view the following applications: Windows Media Player or
QuickTime Player.

• The media should show as much of the dance that is possible. I
understand that sometimes it is impossible to have the full group
together at one time. The media is to give me a basic idea of what you
are planning to do.

• PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT, send your promo media of your group. I want to
see the dance.
NOT a fire jam session
NOT the dance from Burning Man 2007 or past years.
Show me the dance

• Written Information
• Name of Group
• Name of Shin
• List all members of the group with the following information:
• Name
• Position (performers, helmsmen, fire watch or drummers)
• Email address

• Written Detailed Plan of the dance that will be presented on the
playa that will accompany the media.

Fire dancing gig, Oahu, August 1st, for a wedding

URGENT ACTION!! We need you to send email a copy of this right NOW!

If we have ANY hope of burning the phoenix at Rebirth 2008 we NEED the
community to come together RIGHT NOW to make Mayor Harry Kim change
his mind and grant us a burn exemtion. They are telling us that we can
NOT burn the phoenix based on an emergency proclamation banning all
outdoor fires. The Mayor can give us an exemtion but will not give us
the time of day as we are nobodys.

We NEED you the community to send in a mass of emails (please
personalize to your liking but hit on the same points) to help them
understand just how much the community is invested in the burning of
the phoenix.

I am a participant in the annual Rebirth festival in Pahoa. I have
learned recently that the centerpiece of the event, the ceremonial
burning of the phoenix, may be prevented by your emergency

The ceremonial burning of the phoenix has a lot of meaning to me. It
is the culmination of an event that has:

-Brought me closer to my neighbors and community
-Helped to support local art and artists
-Become a boon to a economically troubled part of the island

The ceremonial burning of the phoenix is the formal end to Rebirth.
Without it I leave empty and unfulfilled. Please grant a burn exemtion
to Rebirth 2008 so we can continue our tradition.

Fire Jam Cinco de mayo!!

I feel it's time for a celebration, and no other way than a night of fire and fabulous friends. It's Cinco de mayo and the week of fire drums, only a week and a half before rebirth, and then a little celebration of lightning in a bottle. So whatever you kids are going to be up - you need some time to come practice your skillz first. Fire knife championships should be right around the corner as well - send good thoughts out to Pana. P.S. In these last few months (since the man) attendance at fire jam has been rather poor, Ka and Laura have been the only two that are almost always religiously there. Between the two they have provided music and light for all. Thanks for holding up the fort. There have also been a few others that make a considerable effort to be there at least a majority of the time (includiing myself). Thank you for making an effort. For the rest of you, this is a community event and shouldn't feel like a chore for those that continually participate, therefore, If poor attendance continues organized fire jam on oahu may cease to exist.

NOTE: The traditional St. Patricks Day (3/17) has been Changed to 3/15 this year by the Roman Catholic Church to avoid conflict with Holy Monday that falls on 3/17/2008.

I have to point out that if you want to come this Sunday, please take into consideration that the Honolulu Festival is also held at the same time, which for you means that parking will be a total bitch if you choose to go the car route. Bicycles, mopeds, and public transportation are highly recommended to prevent insanity.

Last week's potluck was awesome, thanks to everyone for coming, especially to Ellen for bringing hoops and V-Ron for bringing the grill and some delicious chicken. It was like the good old days, good people with good vibes, but with delicious chicken.
We'll be meeting at the same location and will continue to for the foreseeable future. If you haven't been to a beach jam before, it's always load of fun. Learn new tricks on hoop or fire toys, work on ones you've been having trouble with, and lets start doing some group choreography too! We're sharing space with the Hawaii Acrobatics Group and the hoop group and is a kickass place to be the little circus freaks that we are. Come with your gear, good music, bathing suit and your pleasant selves. The stereo system is taken care of. If you want to do fire after sunset, it's at your own risk as Waikiki cops aren't always as friendly and lasse-faire as the Kakaako ones. We would love to see you there, and feel free to invite friends who you think would enjoy it.

Facing the water from Walls (Kapahulu & Kalakaua), walk alongside the beach towards Diamondhead, we'll be about 50 yards past the bathroom following the movie screen. Damn Tourists! Now one wants to spin fire.

Aloha one and all,

I am that "damn tourist" and it will be my first time to the Islands. I have been spinning (fire) poi for four years and I'd love to do it in Hawaii. It's still too cold in Vancouver, BC (Canada) and the fire gang here won't start for another month or two. Too long. It would be a good excuse to buy some new fire gear too (I'm packing too much as it is).

So a few questions:
Where can I buy a set of poi (monkey balls or other).
Is there a good performance (or teacher) of traditional poi dances?
Where and when do people meet (and if I can steal some fuel). I see the Oahu gang meets Mondays but ...

Where I'll be and when (can travel) :

Oahu (Honolulu) - Wed, Feb 27 (so soon!) to Sat, March 1 ( ... but I'm not there on a Monday)
Big Island (Hilo) - Sun, March 2 - Thurs, March 6
Maui - Sat, March 8 - Tues, March 11
Kaui - Thurs, March 13 - Sat, March 15

So if you want to meet a "damn tourist" (but we Canadains are pretty nice!) I'd love to get together.
If you are interested in Harmonic singing or Tuvan throat singing (both are ways to sing multiple notes at once - yes, it's possible .... in a round about sort of way) I'd also be willing to demostrate and give a crash course. (I'm also planning You Tube lessons this summer - no vids there yet but "HarmonicSpoke" is my tag).

Hey homies, waves fuckin rocked yesterday (at least for boogieboarders) and they're supposed to rock again today. Get wet, then dry yourself with huge flames! Don't know how to use fire toys to get dry? ...well, sucks to be you! Come on over, bring good vibes and good music and we'll have some fun.

aloha my fiery friends !!! well well, the time has come once again to come together as a family here; in the wonderful hawaiin island chain . getting into the burningman fire conclave is no easy task . with the growing number of fire artists springing up each year, the requirements to be excepted into the great circle are tighter then ever . for the last two years, i have been accepted into the circle being involved with the wonderful troupe " illumination" , which i regret to inform, will not be submitting an audition video this year to crimson rose ( burningman ). things have changed here as they always do. people change, people grow, and it is time for new seeds to be planted. i want nothing more than to feel the honor and accomplishment of being involved with the biggest fire show on earth . in order to do that; alot of work and dedication is needed . this letter is a calling out to every fire artist ,fire safety, drummers and photo/cinematographers who are dedicated to bringing our beautifull fire art back into the great circle this year . Tickets to Rebirth 2008 are going on sale on January 25th!

Online ticket sales will begin at 8 AM on Friday January 25th on the Ka Pilina website (www.kapilina.org). There will be a total of 50 tickets available online in the first tier ($40), and 100 available in each succeeding tier ($50, $60, and $70).

We will have tickets available at outlets on each island starting in early February, check the Ka Pilina website for full details when they are available. Big Island outlets will have a total of 50 of the first tier of tickets ($40) while neighbor island outlets will start by selling second tier tickets ($50).

When our online registration system is up and running we will also have available a limited number of discount tickets for Volunteers ($30), low-income ($30), and performers ($40). Check back with the Ka Pilina website (www.kapilina.org) for the full details when they are available.

CRITERIA FOR BECOMING A GROUP WITHIN THE FIRE CONCLAVE 2008

CHALLENGE ONCE AGAIN
I challenge the Fire Performers of today and I know that you will meet
and embrace it whole heartedly. Leave the past dances alone and take
the evolutionary leap. If you have done a dance a certain way then try
something else. That is the whole point of choerography to try new
dances, moves, new tools. Stretch your imagination. The drive
to excel fire dance is a continued push for evolution. New and
different moves that propel a flaming tool through the air takes on
new life.

For those of you that have gifted your fire love within the Great
Circle, I ask that you read the information again even IF you think
you know. Every year we start fresh, no one is guaranteed a spot
within the Great Circle.

You ask WHY must I choreography the fire dance? Because everybody and
their "mother" is utilizing fire as part of their dance. Simple fire
dance moves use to wow the crowds, that is not the way it is any more.
We want more.

IMPORTANT FOR THIS YEAR - Each group must be comprised of at least 10
fire performers plus support staff.

STEP ONE ~ COMMUNICATE INTENT - TELL ME

STEP TWO ~ CREATE CHOREOGRAPHY

STEP THREE ~ SUBMIT MEDIA - SHOW ME

CRITERIA FOR BECOMING A GROUP WITHIN THE FIRE CONCLAVE

All groups, old or new, will be required to audition for admission
into the Fire Conclave membership, and will be considered based on the
following:

• SHIN - there must be one person who will take charge and be the
leader of a group. INCLUDING being present on the playa until after
burn night.
• Consciousness of Safety and understand the protocols at all times
• Complete and quality of application information.
• Clarity and ease of communication between Crimson and Shin.
• Communications between Shin and members of the group.
• Quality of proposed performance content.
• Adherence to rules, standards, deadlines.
• Rally a group of free spirited individuals.
• Lead with a firm but flexible and patient hand.
• Be willing to vouch and be responsible for the actions of all
members of their group.
• AND recognize spinning in the Great Circle is an honor and a gift.
• Being responsible for wrangling cats on fire in a choreographed
fire dance and communicating all necessary information.

• Qualified entries will create choreography. This can include any
fire tool and is open to broad interpretation in an effort to
encourage diversity and creativity from the Fire Artists in the
community.

• Anything beyond the standard tools, MUST be Ok'd by Crimson before
assuming that it will be allowed inside the Great Circle.

• Fire Conclave is given 25 minutes to dance. This can be broken up in
how ever you feel it works for you. You might only have 15 minutes of
dance, that is fine. You can do chaos / free style after that.

IF IF IF - A Shin from past years is going to pass the Shin reins to
another person, I must hear from the present Shin before I accept the
new one.
• Shin will communicate the intention that their group is interested
in performing and willing to meet the criteria, deadlines and
responsibilities.
• The Shin may or may not know in March how many performers or who the
support staff is or what kind of dance the group will be creating. All
of this is fine.
• Because of the crazy nature of life in general the Shin may want to
name a person that will assist them with activities, carry part of the
load. This is what we call Shin Assist.
• Even if you have communicated with me since the last event, please
send another email with as much of the following information:

Once March 1st deadline has arrived, a discussion list for the Shin's,
Shins Assist will be created. The list will communicate details that
are essential for further information and to share knowledge among
other groups. As the years progresses we will add the Helmsmen to the
list as well.

CREATE CHOREOGRAPHY

• Create Choreography – The art of composing dances, the movement and
patterns of a dance composition means there is thought to the dance.

The direction for the Fire Conclave is choreographed dances, the
opposite to simple fire jam/ chaos. There is nothing wrong with free
form fire jams and each group will get a chance at a bit of chaos. But
to step within the boundary of the Great Circle, there needs to be
more. A diverse range of styles and techniques, choreograph with
intention make the best contribution to the Fire Conclave. “Fire
Dance” does NOT mean only one kind of dance or only a small number of
tools. Fire Dance is as diverse and wide ranging as the imagination of
the dancer that lights up. It is human nature to evolve and the drive
to move fire dance to the next evolutionary leap is no exception.
Because of the diverse level of the membership of the Fire Conclave,
some of you are already familiar with creating choreographed dances.
While others are not use to thinking in this direction, it become a
stretch (in a good way) of your creative mind. The dance can include
any fire tool and is open to broad interpretation in an effort to
encourage diversity and creativity from fire artists in the community.
Choreography does not necessarily
mean a synchronized dance, but it could.

STEP THREE STEP THREE STEP THREE
SUBMIT MEDIA - SHOW ME ~ DEADLINE - JULY 1, 2008

• Submit Media – This could be in any form; video, DVD, web address. I
am able to view the following applications: Windows Media Player or
QuickTime Player.

• The media should show as much of the dance that is possible. I
understand that sometimes it is impossible to have the full group
together at one time. The media is to give me a basic idea of what you
are planning to do.

• PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT, send your promo media of your group. I want to
see the dance.
NOT a fire jam session
NOT the dance from Burning Man 2007 or past years.
Show me the dance

• Written Information
• Name of Group
• Name of Shin
• List all members of the group with the following information:
• Name
• Position (performers, helmsmen, fire watch or drummers)
• Email address

• Written Detailed Plan of the dance that will be presented on the
playa that will accompany the media.

• For those that live in the Bay Area, it is possible to do a Show Me
in person, please schedule ahead of time.
